A "contingent fee" is a fee charged if a certain event occurs.

Where the client is a plaintiff (i.e., the person who claims against another in litigation), the event on which a contingent fee is paid is usually a settlement or court award in favour of the plaintiff, and the amount of the fee is an agreed percentage of the settlement or award.

In British Columbia, contingent fee agreements must be in writing.

I rarely enter into contingent fee agreements.
